Setting Expectations - Can an Auto Trader Save up to 95% on book value?

The truth is don't expect to sign up with these auctions, and instantly save 95% everytime. However, after reviewing the testimonials, and seeing first hand, Savings are still pretty substantial. Expect to save around 20-60%. The best deals that I've seen were cars that I wouldn't prefer to drive myself. For example in the testimonial page of CheapCarFinder, a customer claimed to have bought a 1999 Hyundai Elantra GLS Sedan for $350 at a local car auction. The savings was about 94%. Wow, but I still wouldn't want a Hyundai Elantra.

In addition, don't expect to get a brand new Porshe at 90% off either. I've seen older BMW models, for example a 1998 BMW 528i Sedan sold for 80% off book value. But Alas, with any auction it is always a combination of demand, timing, budgeting, and competition (number of bidders). These 4 factors influence how large of a discount you will receive. US Government seized cars give the most discount due to the fact that they are a nonprofit organization. They seize the car at no or little cost, and want to liquidate seized cars as soon as possible due to storage costs. The US government does not run a car dealership, so it is in their interest to liquidate quickly. Online Car Auctions are gaining popularity, and we may see reduced discounts in the future. However, many buyers prefer to go to the dealership to buy a car, then to bid at a highly discounted car at a local or online car auction. A smart auto trader will look at local and online auctions, as well as for sale by owner listings.
